While it's possible Obi-Wan may have just been trying to help out LA-R1's owner (the text does make clear he knows him), he certainly doesn't seem to believe this particular droid is so easily replaceable. However, 'An Old Hope' seems to indicate Obi-Wan eventually learned to care more about them. This and Obi-Wan's kindness causes LA-R1 to mistake the elderly Jedi for a Santa Claus-like figure known as the 'Oil-Bringer.' Obi-Wan replies by saying, 'R2 units are a dime a dozen. The droids have always been equal to and bordering on superior to organics in Star Wars. In The Clone Wars episode 'Downfall of a Droid,' for example, Anakin Skywalker loses R2-D2. Theres no big explanation of the clones being better or anything. While Obi-Wan didn't necessarily hate droids, he's often dismissive of them, and prioritizes organic life over droids at several points in the saga. However, the Star Wars: Life Day Treasury seemingly shows that Obi-Wan's views on droids evolved following his exile in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. In the Star Wars Universe, Obi-Wan Kenobi has often had something of an odd relationship with droids.
